Multiplayer Games Beta

Hello, and welcome to the DYOG Multiplayer Games thread. DYOG multiplayer games allow members of Dig Your Own Grave (and the rest of the Littlegrey community) to play against each other in multiplayer games. Everything related to the multiplayer system is currently in beta, so be aware that there may be bugs, and in some cases, incomplete features.

There are currently two multiplayer games available:

Play Pente
Play Squarez

If you run into any bugs, or have any general comments on things you find confusing or annoying, please post them here. I read everything.

Special thanks to everyone who's helped out with the testing up until this point! Looking forward to your feedback, and I hope you have fun!

-Mr. Admin

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

The game still has a few small problems.  it won't let you type  <  in the chat.  Also I think the points system might need a bit more tweaking.  Original got 7 points by beating me once.

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

Thanks Brett. I'll check out that chat bug.

I'm actually pretty happy with the points system so far. The whole idea is to reward people for getting better and challenging higher ranked players. You're #1 in skill right now, and it should be worth a lot more for someone to beat you than for someone to beat a player who ranks equal to them. If the points system didn't work this way, lower ranked players would never want to play against you because the risk of loss of skill wouldn't be worth the points reward.

But I'll keep an eye on it, and let me know if you have any other comments on the issue.

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

I also noticed something about the chat - if you keep the Enter key pressed down, it spams the chat with blank posts.

I think, though, that the person doing it is the only one that can see it. Maybe not obnoxious to other people... but still, I think it's a mentionable bug.

Edit: A few minor things. You can still type in the text box when your opponent has disconnected from Squarez (and Pente too I'm assuming, haven't tried it yet), and seriously? The Elo Rating system is really freaking confusing. Take a look at this:

It says here that Turtle is as skilled as me, yet my skill rating beats his by a little over a hundred, I've played 32 more games than him, and I have 37 more total points than him. I'm probably missing something here, but that whole equation just makes no sense to me.

One more thing... would it be possible to put in a feature that allows you to actually invite people into a game that you've made while they're in the lobby, instead of them having to notice you have made a game, and clicking "Join"?

Thanks for pointing out those chat issues. I'll add them to the list.

I agree Elo can be a bit confusing, but it's also been around for a long time, and accepted as a very standardized ranking system (XBoxLive uses a modified Elo ranking system).

Two things to keep in mind regarding Elo:

1) The more games you play, and with a greater assortment of opponents, the more accurate your rating becomes. The way I have the algorithm setup, I don't even consider the rating to be 'accurate' until you've played at least 10 games (that's why you don't show up in the leaderboard until then). So in this case Turtle is still under 10 games and his rating can be assumed to have a larger than normal error variance.

2) The range of Elo ratings is in the thousands. 1000 is considered to be a 'skilled beginner'. In chess, Grand Masters will often have ratings up to 2800+. So in that sense  a difference in skill of less than 100 is pretty minor.

At some point (hopefully soon) I'm going to implement a 'challenge' feature. There will be a CHALLENGE button when you popup someone's avatar, and issuing a challenge will send a message directly to that player and auto-start a game if they accept.

Turtleboy, what version of Opera are you using? (Help->About Opera)

Also, when do you get this problem? Is it when you first go to the lobby, when a game starts up, or when you finish a game?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

Version 9.51.
But what I was trying to say was that rankosaur dosn't work on opera so I couldn't take a screenshot of myself to prove that I wasn't spamming. The games work fine for me when I use Opera.
But I get sent to that blank page on Internet Explorer, which I think I made a thread in the technical support forum. I get that problem when I play squarez. I click the link to play squarez then I get into the lobby and as Its connecting me it gose white. Its probably somthing I'm either gonna have to find a solution on my own, or keep my pongnop medal and screw IE.

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

Regarding the chat spamming, I'm not going to let this thread devolve into a multi-page argument on who spammed first. There's much more important multiplayer bugs that need to be focused on in this thread right now.

When the multiplayer games get released to the full community, I'll keep an eye on the chatroom logs. If spamming becomes a problem I'll deal with it (or who) then. Thanks for understanding.

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

I still say squarez is massively unfair sad

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

Why do you think Squarez is massively unfair?

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

Because you can make giant squares in already filled spaces, You can put lines inside a giant square when you make one, and you can make rectangles that are 2 squares long in width 1 square long in height.

#19 2008-10-13 13:15:00

Re: Multiplayer Games Beta

Well both players can do all these things, so I don't think it can be called 'unfair'. Regarding each issue:

Completing squares in already filled spaces will not give you any points - you'll only get points for parts of the square that were unfilled.

I tried a version of the game that didn't allow edges in filled squares, but it felt a bit limiting. Maybe I'll make it an option so that you guys can try for yourself.

Making rectangles that are 2 squares long probably happened because the added edge completed a square on each side. So it wasn't a rectangle, it was just two squares completed by the same edge.
